Soon after I wrote my first book, My Pencil Made Me Do It: A Guide to Sketchnoting I realized there was a whole group of educators, non-educators, and most of all, children who would never read that book. I also knew I didn’t want what I had to share, to say and teach about sketchnoting to end with that book. Most of all I knew I wanted to continue to connect sketchnoting, its parts and its power with more and more people (if I’m being honest…the whole world). I couldn’t think of a better way to do that than to write a children’s book.
When I did it became a story that is all the parts of my heart…
Its Structure
A strategy I use often to enhance and structure my teaching and strengthen my students’ learning, is anchoring. Readers are introduced to a very messy desk, something everyone knows and can relate to. This known object’s parts are then used to anchor to the new learning, sketchnoting and its parts.
The Story
Stanley and The Very Messy Desk not only takes readers on a silly adventure, filled with squeaks, squeals and scampers, it also asks them to grab some paper, pencil and be a part of a hands on, fun, doodle to learn experience.
Stanley The Hamster
This 3 inch, fuzzy, life hugger has been waiting for years, in my heart and in my imagination to be a part of an adventure like this. Now he gets to be completely and totally himself, help me teach others the incredibleness of sketchnoting and inspire others to grab some paper, pick up a pencil and try it too!
Sketchnoting
Sketchnoting, its parts and its process impacts every part of my teaching. It has been a part of my life for over seven years. The power of sketchnoting’s visual thinking and doodling to learn is something that I continue to be incredibly passionate about. I never get tired of sharing about its impact on life, learning and teaching. I strive to find more ways for more and more people to connect with it!!
There Are Ao Rules
In teaching and in life, I have long believed that that whether it is bringing out the best in our students, learning creating or just being you, there are no rules. Stanley and The Very Messy Desk: An Adventure in Sketchnoting embraces and hugs tight my “there are no rules” belief when it combines a story with learning, and doodle-filled, hands on experiences that readers can instantly connect with, experience and use instantly.
